The term Geomatics was introduced in
the 90’s referring to acquisition, processing, analyzing,
storage, distribution, presentation and use of spatial information.
The main branches of Geomatics are: Surveying, Cartography, Geodesy,
Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS).
The Department of Geomatics of UFPR is responsible for teaching and research in
Geodetic Sciences. It offers a range number of disciplines for many
undergraduate courses such as: Geography,
Oceanography, Agronomy, Civil Engineering, Surveying Engineering
(Cartographic), Forestry, Geology, Architecture, Zootechny.
The Geomatics Department of UFPR has been pioneer to initiate a
geodetic sciences program for Graduates in the
in 1972.
In 1977 starts a comprehensive
undergraduate program Cartographic Engineering
(Surveying) in order to provide a very high
demands of Surveying Engineers in Brazil. Today, it reaffirms its leadership in
matters of training and research in this field.

The Department has 23 academic members most of
them are PhD holders. Staff pays
especial attention to the technical and scientific work and projects to
supply our Graduates and Undergraduate students with real-world
experience.

The
support staff is composed of a technician, a secretary and the labs
assistants and their major role is to support the academic staff in
accomplishing their objectives.
